The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have incorporated the statement “A Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts may be considered in lowering the risk of stroke” into the Recommendations for Diet and Nutrition of the Guidelines for the Primary Prevention of Stroke.
The study “Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease with Mediterranean diets: the PREDIMED trial” has been included in the Guidelines. PREDIMED is the acronym of a long-term nutritional intervention study that assessed the efficacy of a Mediterranean Diet supplemented with nuts or extra-virgin olive oil in the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
The aim of the AHA/ASA Guidelines is to provide comprehensive and timely evidence-based recommendations on the prevention of stroke among individuals who have not previously experienced a stroke or transient ischemic attack.
